Iranian and Armenian first, with Middle Eastern breadth around it — cardamom, rose, pistachio and almond are the working vocabulary, not a decorative flourish.

Flatbreads baked as bread, not as a garnish. Barbari, the long ridged Persian loaf, is treated as the structural base of the sandwich offer, which is what separates a real bakery from a café that buys in a tray of buns.

Armenian pastry that is genuinely hard to find in this city. Gata and qotta belong to a baking tradition with almost no other shopfront in downtown Vancouver.

A mother in the kitchen. The baklava is made by the owner’s mother, to the recipe her daughter loved, which is a level of authorship most cafés cannot claim about anything they sell.

A downtown location that is not a chain. On a retail strip dominated by international signage, this is one of the few independent counters left standing.

Catering as a real second business. Corporate orders, weddings and birthdays are handled from the same kitchen, which is why the pastry output is larger than the small room suggests.

What’s in the cup

Be clear about what this café is and is not. Bahar does not roast, and does not publish a roasting partner; there is no origin board, no rotating single origin, no filter bar. The espresso programme is the competent, unfussy kind that a bakery runs so that its pastry has something to sit beside. If a named roastery and a conversation about processing method is what brings you out of the house, several places on this same list — some of them a short walk away — are built for exactly that, and this one is not.

What Bahar does bring that almost nothing else downtown brings is the other half of the Iranian drinking tradition. Tea is not an afterthought here the way it is in most Canadian cafés; in Persian hospitality it is the centre of the table, poured strong and taken slowly, and a bakery of this kind is built around that rhythm. Cardamom runs through the sweet side of the counter, and it is the single flavour that ties the drinks and the baking into one idea rather than two departments.

The practical consequence is that the right order here is a pairing, not a coffee. Espresso and milk drinks are made properly and will not disappoint anyone; but the reason to cross downtown for this address is what happens when a rose-and-pistachio pastry meets something hot and slightly bitter. Judge the café on that and it is one of the more distinctive stops in the city. Judge it as a specialty coffee bar and you will have measured the wrong thing.

Who’s behind it

The café is run by Ali Karami Moghadam together with his mother, Beheshteh Rezapour, and it opened in the autumn of 2023 after roughly two years of planning. It carries the name of his sister, Bahareh — and bahar is also the Persian word for spring, so the sign works in two registers at once.

Bahareh was thirty-three, a permanent resident of Canada, and one of the 176 people killed when Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 was shot down shortly after taking off from Tehran in January 2020. The aircraft was Ukrainian and so was its entire crew; a large share of the passengers were Canadians and Canadian residents flying home. Opening a bakery for their mother had been Bahareh’s idea. Her brother built it instead, and has said in interviews that it is impossible not to think about what happened, but that at least there is now something to do that keeps you alive rather than only remembering. Another woman who lost her daughter and son-in-law on the same flight works here too.

This matters for a practical reason as well as a human one. A café built by a family, staffed by people who are there for reasons other than a wage, and cooking recipes attached to a specific person, behaves differently from a franchise: the recipes do not get value-engineered, and the person behind the counter tends to know what is in everything. That difference is legible from the first visit, without anyone needing to explain the story.

What kind of visit it suits

The best use of Bahar is the short, deliberate visit — twenty or forty minutes, seated, with something on a plate. It is a small downtown room on a busy shopping strip, and it works beautifully for a coffee-and-pastry meeting between two people, for a solo pause with a book in the middle of a day spent in the core, or for the deliberate detour of someone who has been hunting for Persian baking and has finally found a counter that does it properly.

It is a weaker choice for the four-hour laptop session. The room is compact, the seating is limited, and the trade is walk-in and takeaway heavy, which means a table held all afternoon costs the house real money and costs you the atmosphere you came for. If you need to work, come knowing that an hour is polite and three is not — and that the counter, honestly, will not be the one to tell you so.

Takeaway is where a surprising share of the value sits. Bread and pastry travel well, and a box carried out of here is one of the better things you can bring to somebody else’s table in this city. Between the flatbreads, the cakes and the preserves, this is as much a shop to buy from as a room to sit in — and the catering side means larger orders are routine rather than an imposition.

Space and atmosphere

The storefront is glass, bright and open to the pavement; inside it is wooden tables, a full pastry counter and a fairly small number of seats. It is a bakery footprint rather than a café footprint — the counter is the centre of gravity and the seating is arranged around it, not the other way round.

The mood is warm and domestic in a way that downtown cafés generally are not. This is partly the smell, which is what a working bakery smells like and no candle can imitate, and partly the fact that the people running it are the people who own it. Conversations at the counter run long. Nobody is performing minimalism; the room is not styled for photographs, and it is better for that.

Noise is moderate — the sound of a small room with a busy shopping street outside — and it fills and empties quickly with the rhythm of downtown foot traffic. It is not a hushed room and it is not a loud one, which makes it easy to talk in without lowering your voice.

What goes with the coffee

Everything here is baked on the premises, and that single fact is the whole argument for the address. The output splits three ways: Persian sweets built on rose, pistachio, almond and cardamom; Armenian pastry of a kind that has almost no other outlet in the downtown core; and bread — the long ridged flatbread that Iranian households buy fresh, used here both on its own and as the base of the sandwich menu.

That last point is worth underlining, because it is unusual. Most café sandwiches are assembled on bread somebody else made. Here the bread is the house’s own work and the filling is built to suit it, which changes the whole balance of a savoury order. Add house-made preserves and cakes to that and the food side of Bahar comfortably outweighs the drinks side — which is the correct order of priority for a place that put the word bakery first on its sign.

When to come

Bahar keeps bakery rhythms rather than office rhythms. The counter is fullest in the middle of the day, when the downtown lunch trade and the shopping crowd overlap, and it thins out pleasantly on either side of that peak. The most reliable time for a calm table is mid-afternoon on a weekday; the least reliable is a weekend on the shopping strip, when the pavement outside is at its busiest and the room turns over fast.

One genuinely useful piece of timing advice: the best of a bakery is always earlier rather than later. Anything that comes out of an oven is at its peak the day it is baked and the specific items on the counter change with what has been made, so a visitor with a particular pastry in mind should come in the first half of the day rather than the last. Coming late is fine for coffee and a seat; it is a lottery for the shelf.

Getting there

The café sits right in the downtown retail core, on the shopping promenade that runs between the art gallery and the central library — an area almost everybody visiting Vancouver crosses at some point, whether they meant to or not. Vancouver City Centre station on the Canada Line is a very short walk, and the Expo and Millennium lines are only a little further; a dense grid of downtown bus routes passes within a block.

Do not drive. This is one of the least car-friendly pockets of the city, parking is metered, scarce and expensive, and the whole point of the location is that it is on a route you are already walking. Coming on foot from the library, the gallery or the waterfront takes minutes and is the natural way in.

Good to know

Come hungry rather than thirsty. The honest hierarchy at Bahar is pastry first, bread second, drinks third — the coffee is good enough to keep you there and not the reason to come. Anyone whose priority is a carefully brewed filter should treat this as a bakery stop and get the cup elsewhere.

The room is small, so a group of five or six is optimistic at peak and a large meeting is the wrong idea entirely. Seating can run out. If the visit matters, aim for the quieter part of the afternoon, or plan to carry the order out — which, given how well this baking travels, is not a consolation prize.

If you are unfamiliar with Persian and Armenian baking, ask. The people behind the counter are the owners and they are generous with explanations, which is genuinely the fastest way into a tradition that does not label itself in English on the shelf. And if you are ordering for an occasion, the catering side is a real service and not a website afterthought.

Questions and answers

What kind of bakery is this exactly?

Persian first, with a substantial Armenian element and Middle Eastern range around both. That means rose, pistachio, almond and cardamom as the core flavours, traditional flatbread, and pastry styles you will not easily find elsewhere downtown.

Is everything baked on site?

Yes — the baking is the business, and that is the main reason to choose this address over a café that buys its counter in. The preserves are house-made as well.

Does the café roast its own coffee?

No, and it does not name a roasting partner. The espresso is honest, everyday café standard, made to accompany the pastry rather than to compete with the specialty bars nearby.

Why is it called Bahar?

It carries the name of the owner’s sister, Bahareh, who was killed in the downing of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 in January 2020. Opening a bakery for their mother had been her idea; her brother and their mother built it. Bahar is also the Persian word for spring.

Can I work here on a laptop?

For an hour, comfortably. For an afternoon, no — the room is small, seats are limited and the trade is fast. Treat it as a pause rather than an office.

Is it good for takeaway?

Very. Bread, pastry and cakes all travel well, and a box from here is a better gift than most things you can buy downtown. Larger orders for events are a normal part of the business.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. It is a bright, informal bakery counter with no restrictions, and the sweet side of the shelf tends to win children over quickly. Space is the only constraint at peak.

Is it easy to reach without a car?

Extremely — it is in the middle of the downtown walking core, minutes from a Canada Line station and on a shopping route most visitors cross anyway.
