JOEY Shipyards: Dinner with the Skyline Watching
Some restaurants have a view; JOEY Shipyards has a backdrop. Set on the water in North Vancouver’s revived Shipyards District, its dining room and vast terrace look straight across Burrard Inlet at downtown Vancouver — a skyline that shifts from silver to gold to glitter over the course of one dinner. It’s the North Shore’s default answer to any occasion worth marking.
The Concept
The JOEY brand is a Canadian premium-casual institution, three decades in the refining: globally inspired menus run by real chefs, cocktails crafted with intent, and hospitality polished to a shine. Shipyards is among its flagships — two storeys and some ninety-five hundred square feet on the Lower Lonsdale waterfront, built to show the brand at its most confident.
What to Order
Begin with fire-touched sushi cones or the rainbow roll, add the famous crispy mashed-potato spring rolls for the table, then let the mains travel: Cajun-blackened chicken, grilled steaks, poke bowls, mini steak French dips with gruyère and warm jus. Lighter appetites land happily on the Mediterranean bowl or a salad; everyone lands on the key lime pie, its meringue torched to order. The wine wall and cocktail list mean the pairing question always has a good answer.
The Space
Warm wood, dark leather and walls of glass arranged so nearly every seat catches the water, with an iconic twenty-five-hundred-square-foot terrace that ranks among Metro Vancouver’s finest. Heaters and blankets keep it civilized on cool evenings; inside, the room hums with the polish of a big-city flagship that happens to face one.
Who It’s For
Anniversary dinners timed to sunset, family celebrations with out-of-town guests to impress, brunches that stretch into afternoon, and couples who want the postcard without the ferry ride. For the North Shore, this is the occasion room.
Good to Know
Should I book ahead? Yes — especially for weekend evenings and any night the forecast looks kind.
Are children welcome? Very — high chairs, a crowd-pleasing menu and staff who take families in stride.
Which seats have the best view? The terrace rail and the window tables upstairs; mention the occasion when booking.
Is it walkable from the SeaBus? A short, pleasant stroll along the waterfront — part of the evening’s charm.
Can it host a celebration? Yes — large tables and group arrangements are routine here, even at peak times.
